About the PI

Satish Khurana, PhD

Wellcome trust-DBT India alliance fellow and Assistant Professor,

School of Biology, IISER-TVM

Biography

Satish developed interest in adult stem cells during his Masters’ course at the Department of Botany, Delhi University. He took a special paper on plant tissue culture that raised several questions over restricted fate decisions in animal cells. He wanted to address “potency” related issues in tissue specific stem cells for which it was considered that lineage boundaries couldn’t be crossed. He decided to do his PhD from National Institute of Immunology and became the first student of the Stem Cell Biology Lab under the supervision of Dr. Asok Mukhopadhyay. His PhD started with looking into the role of bone marrow derived progenitors in liver regeneration but slowly led him to ask if there was any developmental relation between hepatic and hematopoietic systems as they develop in close proximity in the fetal liver. He visited Stem Cell Institute of KU Leuven in Belgium in 2008 and decided to do a Post-doc with Prof. Catherine Verfaillie, starting in June 2009. His post doctoral work focused on; 1) Understanding genetic/molecular differences between proliferating fetal versus quiescent adult bone marrow (BM) hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), 2) Improving culture-induced loss of hematopoietic stem cell homing of mouse bone marrow and human umbilical cord blood (hUCB) derived Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), 3) Understanding how oxygen sensing cellular mechanisms regulate HSC function, 4) niche control of the HSC function, and 5) the regulation of HSC function and ageing by outside-in integrin signaling.

At IISER TVM, for the first five years, his lab will focus on identifying key molecular regulators of HSC function during adult and fetal stages. Human UCB derived HSCs will also be used to take the important findings closer to clinic. Self-renewal, homing and ageing of HSCs will be the major functional attributes of the cells under investigation. In future, the lab will also aim at; a) outside-in integrin signaling in leukemic progression and b) developing pluripotent stem cells as an alternative source of transplantable HSCs.
